English Idioms by Topic

English idioms can be grouped by the ideas, situations, and subjects they commonly express. Akcento organizes idioms into topics such as communication, emotions, money, work, time, nature, luck, and everyday situations.

These categories are intended to make the collection easier to explore. Instead of searching for a particular expression, you can browse idioms related to a subject or idea you want to understand or express.

How English Idioms Are Categorized

Categories reflect meaning and usage

Categories are based primarily on an idiom’s meaning and typical use, rather than simply on the individual words it contains.

An idiom that includes a word such as weather, for example, does not necessarily belong to the Weather & Nature category if its actual meaning is mainly related to emotions, behavior, or another subject.

Some idioms fit more than one topic

Idioms do not always fit neatly into a single category. An expression may relate to emotions as well as social interaction, or to time as well as change.

For the purposes of navigation, Akcento assigns each idiom to the category that best represents its main meaning or typical use. This keeps the category system useful without pretending that the boundaries between topics are absolute.

What You Can Find in Each Category

Each category brings together idioms related to a particular subject or type of situation. Within a category, you can explore:

  • meanings and explanations;
  • typical usage and example sentences;
  • information about origins;
  • natural equivalents in other languages.

Categories can therefore be useful not only for finding familiar expressions, but also for discovering idioms that express ideas you may want to communicate in a particular context.
